Hey Gang,
people seem to like the process stuff (I know I do), so here is so more. This time a splashpage from VIKING issue 2. If you’re not reading it for shame!!
I really like painting/drawing fire, and in a book set without artifical light I have lots of oppurtunity.
Here is the final page, with PS tweaks and all.
the “pencils” if you will…
a closeup of the same….
Here comes the color…

What are you using to keep your pencils from smearing when you put the wash on top?
This is Great Nic! and Lance had the same question as me. Are you using any kind of Spray fixative? This is Acrylic right?
thx guys, glad you like the steps.
To answer that question, I didnt fix the pencils on this one at all. I used a polychromo black pencil from faber-castell and they are quite fantastic, they hardly smudge.
I do however use clear drying gesso when I want to make 100% sure that my pre-lim drawing is kept safe. Although, during the priming is when I then usually smudge the drawing, I cant be arsed to use fix spray, its to stinky….
you just answered all my questions with that response so i’ll just say: beautiful stuff.
Sweeeet!!!
love the process..sir..
keep on coming..maybe a bit description.
a lot i can learn from you.
take me as your apprentice sir.
I was about to ask you a question of the process behind that page but I’m glad you posted it up! I also cringe at the smell of fixatives.
I think that one of the compliments I can give to your artwork in Viking is how you’re fond of using a two-color palette at the pivotal points of each issue (not to mention the third issue cover).
My question regarding that approach is: Do you utilize certain color tones as a means to evoke or emphasize a dramatic point in the story, or is this mostly directed from the script you’re given?
Diggin’ the comic – thanks for sharing the process!
Sick!
This is awesome Nic. thanks for the process shots
your work is absolutely stunning. I love this piece especially. it’s a shame so few of the graphics workers now do their pieces through traditional media. Also, props to you for getting to design magic cards! awesome!
fantastic!
can you tell me what type of color did you use?
